Opal Creek with Family

Ingrid, Sara, Simone, Trey, Mom, Dad and I went down to Opal Creek for a weekend in one of the awesome cabins. We had really cool weather with mist, rain and great clouds.

Pain And Suffern Mountain Bike Race

Ingrid rode the Pain and Suffern mountain bike race in perfect weather. The course was pretty difficult looking and they rode for 90 minutes over hayed fields, through hilly forest and back up again. Ingrid came in first and got a medal and a free pair of glasses! Very cool.

Whistler Mountain Biking

Ingrid and I went up to Whistler B.C. to see how good their bike park really is. Turns out it's super cool. Ingrid went up on Saturday with a gal racer to give her some tips on downhilling while I read The Girl Who Played With Fire (which is awesome). Ingrid had a great time and went on some gnarly trails. I had the idea of going up on the trails to take photos of her riding, but the pro put the kibosh on that. So I stayed at the bottom and took pictures of people catching air, totally missing when Ingrid would ride through. She marched me over to the rental office and we paid for gear and bike for me the next day. We grubbed out on Mongolian Grill and passed out at the hotel.

We picked up my 30 pound beast and got another guide to help my sorry ass down the hill. It took a few runs to re-educate my turning technique (apparently was 100% wrong.) After lunch we took the gondola up to the top of the mountain for a 5000' descent. The views were awesome and the ride down was cool, a third was fast road and the rest was pretty technical singletrack. We hit a trail that had a banked turn made out of wood, where real men take the low scary line. The riding got better as the day went on for sure.

On Monday before we drove back home we went to the Scandinave spa for massages. The spa was super cool and had different pools and saunas, which without our swim suits was not to be on this trip. The riding was super cool and we will be heading back next year.

Eastern Oregon trip

Eastern Oregon

I stopped at all the cool barns and broken down buildings on the way out east. Someday I plan on finding out who own them and if they'd be willing to part with the wood for a small fee, but I'm still not sure what to do with them.

Malheur Refuge

On the way to the Steens I stopped at two small ponds to look at some birds hanging out. This pond turned out to be Malheur Lake and Mud Lake, much smaller this time of year. After harrassing the birds with my camera I saw on the map there was a back road that goes through the middle of the refuge and took it.

Alvord Desert

The Alvord Desert is a dried up lake bed on the East side of the Steen mountains that gets around 4 inches of rain a year. It looks like a miniature version of the Atacama Desert in Chile. I tried camping out in the middle in a tent but the wind was blowing around 30mph and the tent was quite loud. I moved back to the edge of the lake and slept in the back of the 4Runner. The moon was super bright and you could see the whole lake at night. In the morning I went over to the hot springs and took a dip in the perfect temperature waters. It was really cool to be out there with only the birds chirping and water dripping. Here is a video from the springs and another just hanging out.
